Welcome to NOVA Independent Study

NOVA Independent Study, the Novato Unified School District’s independent study program, is a WASC accredited K-12 program for families who are looking for an alternative to traditional public schools.

After reading about the wide variety of options for K-12 students at NOVA, please call the school for more information or to ask questions about your particular circumstances.

March Madness

NOTE: NOVA is full for the 2009-2010 school year. If you are interested in applying to NOVA for 2010-2011, please submit and application and an unofficial transcript (download from Aeries is OK) to the school to start the admissions process. Please note that NOVA is not a credit recovery school. Independent study students must demonstrate an ability to learn independently.

Everything’s working against us in March. The spring weather (we hope) coupled with early onset of Daylight Saving Time can easily result in serious Spring Fever. Add the intermittent testing (CAHSEE, STAR writing, EAP writing), March Madness, Spring Training and other distractions and it’s easy to see why students might have trouble staying focused.

At NOVA, since we don’t see the students daily, parents need to take on the role of teacher, especially when it comes to motivation. Many students’ progress reports show less than stellar work. Instead of taking your child’s word for it (“I made up the work and now my grade is a B.”), call, e-mail or schedule an appointment with his/her teacher. We still have two-thirds of the semester to go. It’s essential that students do their best work until the last day of school.

Enrollment in NOVA is a privilege, now more than ever. We have our largest student body in recent memory and have started a waiting list. Students who aren’t working to their potential will be asked to leave and/or not be invited back for next year.

February news and dates

Welcome to our new students and parents. As of today, NOVA has 93 students, the largest student

body we’ve had in many years. NOVA is a wonderful alternative for motivated students, and we’re

happy so many of them are finding our school.

However, the success of each of our students and the school depends on certain guidelines. Students

who are busy with dance, music, horses, jobs or other time-consuming activities tend to be organized

and responsible. They do all their work and are usually excited about learning.

But some students seem to have too much free time and not enough motivation. Some of the work

we are seeing either could be done in less than an hour or is of very poor quality. NOVA students

should spend at least four hours a week on assignments for each class. Four hours!

A larger problem concerns students’ whereabouts during the school day. It was very disconcerting to

hear that some of our students were hanging out at The Square all day, causing a nuisance for

merchants. Not only is that embarrassing to us as a school, but it also indicates that NOVA may be

the wrong school for them.

Students should be in school, at work, at home or at the gym/barn/dance studio, not loitering at

shopping centers or at San Marin or Novato High without permission. Please ask to see your

student’s work and talk to him/her about the privilege of independent study.

Thanks,

Ronnie

Happy New Year from NOVA
The beginning of the semester is a good time to remind everyone about the unique challenges of independent study. NOVA students are expected to cover the same curriculum as they would in a traditional school, but the delivery is different. Since the teachers see students once a week, we rely on parents to monitor students’ work. Since students choose their own assignments and are working at their own pace, they should be interested in their assignments and should voluntarily talk about them. If your child is not animated and excited about learning, it may be time to have a talk about school and whether independent study is the right program for him/her. For each NOVA class, students are expected to spend about 4 hours a week (equivalent of 50 minutes a day/course). Call or email your child’s teacher if you are at all concerned about his/her progress.
