Summertime and the living is easy |
NOVA grad featured at Italian Street Painting FestivalCaroline Hoog was the featured student artist at the Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festival held in San Rafael on June 13 and 14. This picture of her work was taken on Sunday, June 14 at around noon; Caroline had been working on her square since Thursday, almost immediately after graduation Wednesday night. The following was published on the Youth in Arts website and on an informational banner at the festival. Caroline, we're very proud of you! Caroline Hoog (Featured Student Artist) is an 18 year-old portrait artist born and raised in Nicasio, California. She discovered her love and talent for art in the fourth grade and her particular interest in portraiture about four years ago. Since then, she has studied privately with Marin painter and international award-winning street painter Genna Panzerella. Caroline has painted portraits for country music star Sara Evans and her work has won Best in Show at the Sonoma Marin Fair for two years running. This will be Caroline's fourth year participating as an artist at the Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festival. Caroline's inspiration and passion in her art comes from her desire to bless others with her work. Caroline will take Leonardo da Vinci's study Head of a Young Woman (c. 1490) as the inspiration for her Feature 2009 Street Painting. End of the year planning guide |
The home stretch As of Friday, May 15, there are only 18 more days of school before the end of the semester. We have noticed some disturbing trends and need your help:
• Absences are increasing: At NOVA, a missed appointment is the equivalent of five missed school days. The teachers are on a very tight schedules, so when a student misses an appointment, the teacher can’t easily reschedule. Please explain this to your student.
Students who miss appointments often end up picking up their new assignments and turning in the previous week’s assignments without the benefit of the teacher’s explanations or critique of the work. It simply doesn’t work. Students will go through the motions without learning.
• Communication is decreasing: If a student must miss an appointment, the master agreement requires that he/she or a parent call or email to let us know. As we get closer to the end of school, we are experiencing more “no shows.”
Education includes skills that adults need to succeed in their careers. Imagine missing a day of work and not telling anyone at your place of employment that you won’t be in. Please help your student to act responsibly.
• Books are disappearing: In the last week, we have lost two Biology teachers’ editions and one Geometry teachers’ edition. These books are made available to students so the teachers don’t have to spend their limited time correcting students’ homework when the students can do it themselves. The three books will cost close to $300 to replace, money we don’t have. Please look around your house to see if your student picked up a book (one of these or others) by mistake. All books must be returned to Mrs. Rodriguez by June 9. Please start searching your child’s room and car now!
Other housekeepingPlease turn in your Intent to Return form if you have not already done so. If we have accurate counts for next year, we can order the right number of books and the district can determine accurate staffing numbers.
Seniors, remember to turn in your diploma name request and cap and gown order to Mrs. Rodriguez.
Seniors planning to attend four-year colleges must have their transcripts sent to the schools at the end of June. Make sure to complete a transcript request form before the end of May.
